AMU: Allegations of debarring student from entrance exam on religious grounds is totally baseless

Aligarh Muslim University today strongly refuted the allegation that Mr Satyaveer Singh, a candidate seeking admission to LLM course, was denied admit card to appear in the LLM admission test on religious grounds.

According to the Controller of Examination, Mr Mujib Ullah Zuberi, the allegation is baseless and unfounded because the concerned candidate, along with 15 other candidates, was declared ineligible as they did not fulfil the eligibility criteria of 55 per cent in qualifying examination, that is LL.B.

According to Prof Javaid Talib, Chairperson, Department of Law, AMU, the candidate, alleging disparity, has obtained 51.64 per cent marks in LL.B. examination of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Agra. He also added that 15 other candidates were declared ineligible to appear in the entrance test. The list of these candidates was uploaded on the website of the Department of Law on June 21, 2018, and they did not need to come to the department for admit card.

Prof Talib said that the allegation made by Mr Satyaveer Singh is a blatant lie and motivated as AMU does not discriminate any student/candidate on any ground.

Professor Zaheeruddin, Dean of the Law Department at AMU said, “The allegation is completely baseless. We disallowed the student from appearing because he did not fulfil the eligibility criteria for the course. A minimum of 55% in LLB is required for the LLM course, while this candidate had scored 51.64%. The accusation that we discriminated him because he is Hindu is completely false. We did not even ask him his name. AMU does not discriminate among students on the basis of religion.”

Application form of the candidate revealed that the candidate’s score at the undergraduate level did not meet the eligibility criteria. To protect the privacy of the said candidate, we have not reproduced a copy of his application form here.

The university had put up a list of candidates on its website who were deemed ineligible for the entrance exam. The list contained 16 names, out of which some candidates are Hindu and the others are Muslim.
