With this visit, he became the third member of the Gandhi family to have worshipped at this shrine. Former prime minister Indira Gandhi has visited the revered temple thrice, while the late PM Rajiv Gandhi, too, went there once.
Congress top brass, including Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Kamal Nath and Campaign Committee chairman Jyotiraditya Scindia, accompanied Gandhi to the temple.
Clad in traditional dhoti-kurta, Gandhi performed the puja amid chanting of mantras and prayed for “happiness and prosperity of the nation”.
A prominent shaktipeeth based on the border of UP and MP, this shrine is believed to be equipped with divine powers to help the devotees defeat their enemies. The temple sees devotees, including the high-profile ones, lining up for the ‘anushthan’ (religious rituals) daily.
However, the priests associated with the temple claim they only accept ‘anushthan’ offers in which the devotee does not intend to hurt anyone.
The temple rose to prominence when a special ‘yagna’ performed during the 1962 Sino-India war helped cease the war, locals claim. It was reportedly carried out at the request of late PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962, and yet again in 1964, when Nehru suffered brain hemorrhage.
During his earlier visit, Rahul Gandhi sought blessings at Vishwakarma temple (Bhopal), Kamtanath temple (Chitrakoot) and Narmada banks in Jabalpur.
Meanwhile, while addressing a public meeting at Datia later in the day, Gandhi once again tried to bolster the confidence of party workers saying that the Congress party belongs to the workers and that no minister could hold on to his post if he is not approachable to the party cadre.
The Congress president once again alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi waived off loans of the corporates and added that it’s the Congress party which has written off farm loans time and again.
Taking a dig at Gandhi’s Datia visit, BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya wished the almighty bestowed him (Gandhi) with prudence. He ridiculed the Congress president saying that wherever he goes, BJP secures victory.
